Thomas Murphy

The prosecutor in both Hiss trials. The Hiss case thrust him into the national spotlight. As a result of the second trial conviction, Murphy, seen here at left, was appointed first as Police Commissioner of New York City and then to the federal bench. Hiss's coram nobis petition filed in 1978 documented numerous examples of prosecutorial misconduct by Murphy and his staff.
